How I Learned to Read and Write at 42

For 42 years, Peter navigated a world built on words he couldn't read -- memorizing road signs, mapping routes in his mind, quietly relying on his wife -- until a moment of panic in a supermarket aisle, afraid he might accidentally poison his family with the wrong milk, made it impossible to keep going as before. What followed was three years of twice-weekly sessions with a volunteer named Alison, working through reading manuals slowly and without judgment, until the world, as Peter puts it, "completely opened up." His goal had been to read the first Harry Potter book, drawn to Harry as a fellow outsider, and he finished it. The story sits with you not because of how far Peter came, but because of how long he carried something so heavy so quietly -- and how, in the end, it was a wife's steady presence, a stranger's patience, and his own willingness to try one more time that made the difference. "I can't believe how beautiful reading is," he says now, and the wonder in that sentence belongs to anyone who has ever arrived somewhere they once thought was not meant for them.

Be The Change

Think of one thing you've quietly avoided, struggled with, or felt ashamed of -- something you've worked around rather than through -- and today, tell just one person about it. Peter carried his secret for 42 years, finding relief only when it "just came out," and that single moment of honesty changed everything. You don't need a solution ready; the act of naming the struggle to someone you trust is itself the beginning.
