Into the Ocean at DawnTwo days after her daughter died, Keri Jones walked back to the beach. Not because she had somewhere to be, but because she needed, as she put it, to give herself to the water. That instinct -- to seek the ocean in the middle of grief -- led her back to the Wednesday Ocean Waders, a group that began in 2021 when a yoga teacher and her son posted on a community page inviting strangers to wade into the dark at 7am. Seven people showed up that first morning; now the group's informal membership tops 2,100. The town of Torquay, on Victoria's surf coast, has nearly doubled in population over the past decade, and that growth has quietly generated an epidemic of disconnection -- new arrivals with no roots, post-pandemic isolation still thawing. WOW became an accidental antidote: cold water, coffee afterward, and what founder Jo Halley describes simply as a kindness she has "never experienced in a group like this in my life." When Shaan died, the waders formed a circle of remembrance on the sand, laid a heart of flowers, and held the grieving mother. Keri, still working through loss, says of the community: "You can't really measure something like that." She's right -- and yet somehow, standing waist-deep in the ocean before dawn, they have.

Be The ChangeIdentify one recurring time in your week -- a morning walk, a coffee break, a commute -- and invite one person, neighbor or near-stranger, to join you for it. Not as a formal gesture, but as a quiet opening. Community rarely begins with grand intention; it begins with showing up at the same time, in the same place. |
