How Intergenerational Relationships Benefit HealthNew research on a program called iGen suggests intergenerational interactions may be especially beneficial to the health and well-being of all involved. In a study, a group of sixth graders in Canada engaged in conversation and activities with long-term care residents at a community center “journaling, learning new technologies, or writing limericks with the elders, many of whom have dementia or other conditions.” The meaningful interactions between the students and the elders are transformational in that they report feeling better, more connected, healthier and kinder. “From my work with elders, I learned stories, games, and how to become a better person,” said a student named Mya. And a resident named Jodi, “who had thought her life was over and sometimes wanted it to be,” said, “I went from a daily dread that I was still alive and breathing... to anticipat[ing] an awesome day that was full of life and joy.”
