Hot Chocolate for a Stranger's PainPaul Byrne stumbled out of a clinic, tearing up from the agony of a back injury so severe he could barely walk. Desperate for something to calm him down, he spotted a chocolate shop. Looking "absolutely awful," he was immediately asked by the barista what was wrong. The barista went on to make him a comforting hot chocolate served with chocolates on a plate. When Byrne finished and went to pay, the barista simply said, "No, it's on me. I've had back pain before, and I know what it's like." It wasn't just the warm beverage that helped -- it was being met with such empathy in a low moment. Decades have passed. Byrne's back eventually healed. But he has never forgotten the guy at the chocolate shop and how understood and seen he was made to feel. Sometimes, the simplest gestures of care can carry us through our darkest moments.
