Visionary Victory for Trachoma For the first time, the number of people requiring interventions against trachoma — the leading infectious cause of blindness — has dipped below 100 million. That number was 1.5 billion in 2002. This triumph is a testament to the power of collaboration, with global efforts applying the World Health Organization's SAFE strategy. Thanks to the dedication of health ministries, local communities, and partners like the International Trachoma Initiative, we've seen a staggering 94% reduction since 2002. PJ Hooper from ITI praises the joint efforts, stating, "Today’s progress is only possible because of the tireless work" of everyone involved. Yet, with nearly 100 million still at risk, the journey isn’t over.
