Your Rose Garden

In 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression in the US, President Roosevelt initiated the nationwide Works Progress Administration (WPA). With the unemployment rate at 25% and people living on the streets in countless numbers, the WPA put people to work creating buildings, bridges, monuments, art installations and gardens all across the country. President Roosevelt understood that people would find hope and meaning in working at jobs that turned a bad situation into something good. Many of the hundreds of projects were simply ways to make communities more beautiful through the arts. This short musical film celebrates the Berkeley Rose Garden, built by the WPA in the 1930s. It continues to this day nearly 100 years later as a living, vital community space where children come to run on the terraces, musicians play, and butterflies find a resting place.
